DU PhD Scholar Suspended, Booked for Assaulting Professor at Umang Bhawan

Delhi University has suspended a PhD scholar and barred his entry into the university premises following an alleged physical assault on a professor at Umang Bhawan in the campus. An FIR in connection with the incident has been registered at the Maurice Nagar police station, and an investigation is currently underway.
According to the Delhi University Proctor’s Office, closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage captured the incident, which occurred around 10:30 am at Umang Bhawan. The footage showed alleged misconduct by Shubham Singh, a PhD scholar at the Faculty of Law who was admitted during the 2024-25 academic session in Phase-II.
Following the incident, the university administration issued orders suspending Singh from the Faculty of Law with immediate effect. Additionally, the scholar has been prohibited from entering the University of Delhi premises under the provisions of Ordinance XV-B of the Delhi University Act, 1922.
Delhi Police confirmed that CCTV footage showed Singh waiting for the professor before allegedly attacking him as he entered the building.
The Democratic Teachers' Front (DTF) strongly condemned the attack on the faculty member. The teachers' body stated that the physical assault on a professor by a research scholar at the Faculty of Law is extremely concerning and demands urgent attention, noting that the recorded video footage showed the scholar waiting and beating the teacher upon his entry into the premises.
Police officials from the Maurice Nagar police station stated that a probe into the circumstances surrounding the assault is ongoing.
