DU Has 13,433 Vacant UG Seats; Class 12 Marks May Decide Admissions After Aug 31

A total of 13,433 undergraduate seats remain vacant at the University of Delhi following three regular seat allocation rounds and two upgrade rounds, according to official data released on Sunday. The vacancies span across institutions in New Delhi, including prominent North Campus colleges.

In response to the vacant seats, the university has opened a spot admission round through Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores, which will continue until August 31. Delhi University Dean of Admissions Haneet Gandhi stated that there may not be further rounds conducted through CUET after this period. Individual colleges with remaining unfilled seats will then be permitted to conduct admissions independently based on Class XII board exam scores.

The current vacancy number marks an increase from the previous year, when approximately 9,000 seats remained unoccupied after all regular allocation rounds. The vacancies have emerged despite an initial registration of more than 1.9 lakh students competing for 71,600 undergraduate seats across the university.

According to admission data recorded as of 1 p.m. on Sunday, the unfilled seats include 2,113 in the unreserved general category, 4,133 among OBC-NCL applicants, 2,038 in the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category, 2,476 in the Scheduled Caste (SC) category, and 1,791 in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. Minority quotas also reflect unfilled capacity, with 566 vacant seats in the Sikh minority category and 316 in the Christian minority category.

The seat vacancies are not confined to off-campus institutions. Prominent North Campus colleges, including St Stephen's College, Hindu College, Hansraj College, and Kirori Mal College, also have unoccupied seats remaining after the initial rounds of seat allocation.
