A 57-year-old domestic worker was run over and killed by a reversing Mahindra Thar in the stilt parking area of Ansal Versalia Society in Sector 67, Gurgaon, on Tuesday afternoon. Following the incident, the driver allegedly rushed the victim to a hospital, but returned the body to the accident spot after she was declared dead and subsequently fled.
The victim was identified as Guddi Devi, a native of Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh who lived with her family in nearby Bhondsi. She worked as a domestic help at the housing society where the incident occurred.
The incident took place between 2:00 PM and 2:20 PM. According to the police, Guddi Devi was sleeping in the ground-floor stilt parking area of the four-story apartment building when a female resident of the fourth floor reversed her Mahindra Thar and accidentally ran over her.
A preliminary police investigation revealed that the vehicle ran over the victim's chest, causing fatal internal injuries and multiple fractures.
Following the accident, the driver panicked, raised an alarm, and alerted neighbors. She used another SUV to rush the injured woman to a private hospital in Sector 68. However, after doctors examined Guddi Devi and declared her dead, the driver allegedly returned to the society with the body, placed it at the exact spot where the accident occurred, and left.
The victim's nephew alleged that the driver did not inform anyone about the death after abandoning the body. The police control room was later alerted by the victim's family.
Officers from the Sector 65 police station arrived at the scene and took possession of the body. In the wake of the incident, Guddi Devi's relatives and other domestic workers gathered to protest outside the driver's residence.
An FIR has been registered against the driver under charges of causing death by negligence and rash driving. While the police have seized the Mahindra Thar and questioned the driver on Tuesday, she is yet to be arrested.
