DoE Removes Minimum Land Norms for Recognition of Private Schools in Delhi

The Directorate of Education (DoE) in New Delhi has scrapped the requirement of a fixed minimum land area for granting recognition, extension of recognition, and upgradation to unaided private schools across the national capital.

According to a recent official order issued by the directorate, the earlier condition prescribing a fixed minimum land area for these approvals has been withdrawn with immediate effect.

The directorate clarified that this relaxation applies specifically to its own recognition process and does not alter any land area criteria established by independent affiliating boards. Any minimum land area required for school affiliation will continue to be governed strictly by the respective norms of the affiliating board concerned.

In its order, the DoE highlighted the formal distinction between recognition granted by the directorate and affiliation issued by an education board. The order stated that the grant of recognition by the directorate shall not be construed as a grant of affiliation or as an exemption from compliance with the norms of the concerned affiliating board or any other statutory authority.

Furthermore, the directorate emphasized that the grant of recognition remains subject to full compliance with statutory provisions. Unaided private schools must continue to adhere to the relevant provisions of the Delhi School Education Act and Rules, 1973, the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, and the Delhi Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules, 2011.
