Digital Art Exhibition Featuring Nine Contemporary Artists Opens at Bikaner House

A new digital art exhibition featuring works by nine contemporary artists is on view at LTC, Bikaner House in New Delhi. Presented by the Mumbai-based digital studio NewArtX, the exhibition titled (Re)claiming Rights of Render(ing) showcases works created using virtual reality, interactive installations, digital sculpture, video art, and projection technologies through August 14.

Curated by Manan Shah, the show features creative works by artists Alex Davis, Atul Bhalla, Gigi Scaria, GR Iranna, Riyas Komu, Sibdas Sengupta, Teja Gavankar, Vibha Galhotra, and Waswo X Waswo. The participating creators utilized digital mediums to expand upon their existing traditional art practices.

Among the featured exhibits, artist Riyas Komu presented a digital work displaying the exact time of Mahatma Gandhi's death at 5.17pm on January 30, 1948. Artist Vibha Galhotra incorporated an interactive virtual reality piece titled Who Owns The Earth?, which transports viewers wearing a VR headset into a desert setting to explore themes surrounding climate change.

Other artists in the showcase employed various technological formats. Sculptor Alex Davis created a digital sculpture reflecting metal luminescence, while Teja Gavankar produced an interactive installation. Gigi Scaria manipulated digital images into collages and sculptural forms. Atul Bhalla and Sibdas Sengupta used video walls and digital editing to highlight environmental and social concerns, while Waswo X Waswo and GR Iranna combined photography with digital editing and fine-art printing.

NewArtX was founded in May 2024 by Saryu Pareek Gupta and Pulkit Gupta. According to Saryu Pareek Gupta, the exhibition aims to offer an ecosystem and technical support team for artists experimenting with new mediums. Pulkit Gupta noted that the studio provides hardware and software resources to assist artists in overcoming financial and technical barriers associated with producing digital fine art.
