Delhi's First Compressed Biogas Plant to Open at Goyla Dairy by September 17

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is set to commission Delhi’s first compressed biogas (CBG) plant at Goyla Dairy in southwest Delhi on or before September 17. The new facility is designed to process 200 tonnes of cattle dung daily, converting the waste into vehicle fuel and organic fertilizer to prevent dairy waste from polluting nearby drains.

MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar inspected the project on Friday and directed officials to expedite the remaining construction work. During his inspection, Khirwar instructed the executing agency to complete all pending civil, mechanical, and electrical works by deploying additional manpower and resources to meet the upcoming deadline.

The project is being executed under the Urban Development Fund of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The plant is designed to process both cattle dung and municipal solid waste to generate compressed biogas and organic fertilizer.

This waste-to-energy initiative assumes significance as Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently set a target of processing 1,500 tonnes of dairy waste as part of the Clean Yamuna initiative. The Goyla Dairy plant represents a key step toward achieving this goal by managing local waste effectively.

Commissioner Khirwar emphasized the environmental and health benefits of the upcoming facility during his site visit. He stated that the executing agency must ensure that no cattle dung flows into nearby drains. He also directed that proper collection, transportation, and processing arrangements must be in place to safeguard the environment and public health.

Following his review of the biogas plant, the commissioner also inspected major solid waste management facilities in the MCD’s West Zone. This secondary inspection was carried out to assess overall project implementation and infrastructure upgrades across the zone.
