Delhi Transporters Enlist Youth for Social Media Drive Ahead of August 4 Parliament March
The Delhi Taxi Tourist Transporters and Tour Operators Association is enlisting the younger generation to launch a social media campaign ahead of its planned August 4 protest march to Parliament against ethanol-blended petrol. The association, which represents more than 1.5 lakh transporters including taxi drivers, truck operators, and car owners across Delhi, aims to rally public support against the mandatory implementation of E20 fuel.
Sanjay Samrat, president of the association, said the idea to use social media came after observing student-led protests against the NEET paper leak at Jantar Mantar and the online support they gathered. He noted that many older transporters are not tech-savvy and struggle to use platforms like Instagram. Consequently, the group decided to ask their children to create reels, post videos online, and engage young transporters and taxi drivers.
The transporters are seeking an independent review of the government's E20 ethanol blending policy. Association member Bobby Jitendra suggested that instead of converting entire fuel stations to ethanol-blended fuel, petrol pumps should install dedicated dispensers so drivers can choose between pure petrol, diesel, or ethanol blends.
Transporters also voiced concerns over vehicle compatibility and performance. Manish Thakur, who operates a luxury rental car service, claimed that E20 petrol has reduced engine performance and mileage in certain vehicles, while questioning the pricing of blended fuel. He cited a court case where a manufacturer was directed to replace a vehicle, raising questions about whether vehicles are truly compatible with ethanol-blended fuel. An internal survey by the association claimed that only four or five petrol pumps in Delhi currently sell pure petrol.
Ahead of the planned demonstration, the Delhi Police has scheduled a meeting with the association on Monday to discuss the protest. Association leaders stressed that they wish to follow the proper process and obtain permission to hold a peaceful demonstration without causing disruption, adding that they will not seek backing from any political party.
