Delhi Traffic Police to Add Modi Mill Flyover Stretch to Congestion Hotspot List
The road stretch leading towards the Modi Mill flyover in Delhi is set to be added to the Delhi Traffic Police's list of congestion hotspots following ongoing traffic chaos caused by a major infrastructure project. Commuters traveling along the corridor connecting the Modi Mill flyover with the Bhairav Temple flyover have experienced severe delays and hours-long traffic jams.
The disruption stems from Public Works Department (PWD) construction work that has been underway since August to connect the two flyovers. The construction activity has heavily restricted vehicular movement along the main corridor and spilled over into adjoining roads, leaving motorists struggling to navigate the area.
According to police officials, the intense gridlock has forced many motorists to seek alternative routes to bypass the construction zone. The congestion has also led some drivers to travel on the wrong side of the road, further worsening the bottleneck and creating additional hazards for commuters.
A senior police officer stated that the PWD project is expected to continue for more than a year. Due to the extended timeline of the civil work, the traffic department determined that formally designating the corridor as a congestion hotspot was necessary to manage vehicular flow.
"When we add a stretch to the list of congestion points, focused measures are taken to improve the situation at the spot," the officer explained. Last week, Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ajay Chaudhary visited the Modi Mill corridor in person to inspect the ground situation and evaluate the traffic snarls.
The addition comes as the Delhi Traffic Police actively revise their list of 62 identified congestion hotspots. The revision involves incorporating emerging problem areas across the capital while removing locations where traffic flow has successfully eased.
Last year, the traffic police identified 62 major hotspots across the city. Those locations included South Extension Part I, Punjabi Bagh roundabout, Yusuf Sarai Market, Ashram Chowk, Qutub Minar T-point, Anand Vihar, Kalindi Kunj on Mathura Road, Mayapuri Chowk, Sarai Kale Khan, Bawana Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Adchini Village, Naraina Flyover, Sardar Patel Marg, the Ring Road stretch near Safdarjung Hospital, and the Kohat–Madhuban Chowk corridor.
