Delhi to Sell Central Onion Buffer at ₹35 Per Kg Across Fair Price Shops and Vans

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday announced that the Union government will provide 1,000 metric tonnes of onions to Delhi, which will be sold at ₹35 per kg through fair price shops to offer relief to residents amid rising retail prices.

Onion prices have increased sharply in recent weeks due to crop damage caused by rain. In Delhi’s retail markets, the kitchen staple is currently selling for around ₹50 to ₹60 per kg.

Addressing the situation, Chief Minister Gupta noted that the administration is acting to shield consumers from high costs. “The government wants to ensure that an essential food item such as onions does not go beyond the reach of ordinary people,” she said.

To expand distribution beyond fair price shops, onions will also be sold through one dedicated van in each of Delhi’s 13 districts, according to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).

An official statement explained that the mobile vans are intended to cover areas where residents may encounter difficulties visiting fair price shops. “The aim is to ensure that affordable onions reach areas where people may find it difficult to access fair price shops. This will improve availability across the Capital and allow more residents to benefit,” the statement said.

Ms. Gupta added that the government is keeping a close watch on onion prices and stock availability to prevent any shortages in the Capital.
