Delhi to Sell 1,000 Metric Tonnes of Onions at Subsidised Rate of ₹35 per Kg

The central government will provide 1,000 metric tonnes of onions to Delhi to be sold to residents at a subsidised rate of ₹35 per kilogram, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Tuesday.

The subsidised onions will be distributed across the city through fair price shops as well as dedicated mobile vans. Under the initiative, one mobile van will operate in each of Delhi’s 13 districts, travelling to different neighbourhoods, with a particular focus on locations where consumer access to fair price shops is limited.

The intervention comes amid rising concerns over the escalating cost of onions in the capital, where the vegetable has been retailing between ₹50 and ₹70 per kilogram in several local markets.

According to the Delhi government, the provision of the subsidised stock is intended to maintain adequate supplies across the city and ensure that the essential kitchen staple remains affordable for ordinary households.

Gupta stated that the government is closely monitoring the availability and market prices of onions. She noted that the administration would take all required measures to prevent any shortage of the vegetable, which serves as a base ingredient in daily cooking.

The government reiterated that its primary focus is to ensure that essential food items remain accessible to residents at reasonable prices and that consumers are protected from sharp price spikes in the market.
