Delhi to Receive 1,000 MT of Onions From Centre for Sale at Rs 35 per Kg
The Central government will supply 1,000 metric tonnes of onions to Delhi, where they will be sold to consumers at Rs 35 per kg through fair price shops and mobile vans, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Tuesday.
The measure is designed to maintain adequate availability of the kitchen staple and prevent supply shortages in the national capital amid growing concerns over rising market prices.
Under the distribution plan, the subsidised onions will be made available through fair price shops across Delhi. To ensure wider reach, the government will also deploy one mobile van in each of the city's 13 districts to transport the stock directly to various neighbourhoods.
Chief Minister Gupta stated that the government would not allow an onion shortage to develop in Delhi and affirmed that authorities would continue monitoring supply conditions to protect consumers from sharp price hikes.
The deployment of mobile vans is specifically intended to improve access in areas where residents face limited access to fair price shops. The initiative forms part of a broader government effort to keep essential food commodities available at affordable rates.
Officials noted that distribution logistics and arrangements are being finalised to ensure the onion consignments effectively reach consumers across all 13 districts of Delhi.
