Delhi Surpasses August Rainfall Average in Eight Days With 230 mm at Safdarjung

Delhi surpassed its average monthly rainfall target for August within the first eight days of the month, recording a cumulative 230.1 mm of precipitation at the key Safdarjung Observatory as of Saturday, August 8, 2026. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the capital has exceeded the normal monthly total following four consecutive days of continuous rain across key stations including Safdarjung, Palam, Ayanagar, Ridge, and Lodi Road.

The city's primary weather station at Safdarjung recorded 225.7 mm of rainfall between the start of August and 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. An additional 4.4 mm of rain was logged between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, taking the cumulative rainfall total for the month to 230.1 mm. Based on the IMD's 1991–2020 climatological period, the mean total rainfall expected for the entire month of August in Delhi is 226.8 mm.

In addition to surpassing the monthly average, Delhi experienced its wettest August day in two years on Saturday, August 8. Safdarjung received 98.7 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 a.m. The last time the capital recorded a higher single-day August rainfall figure was on August 1, 2024, when 107.6 mm was recorded.

Rainfall was widespread across other weather observatories in the city during the 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. Ayanagar recorded the highest 24-hour rainfall total at 115 mm, closely followed by Palam which logged 104.6 mm. The weather station at Ridge recorded 89.8 mm of rain, while Lodi Road measured 86.8 mm over the same period.

Showers persisted into Saturday afternoon across the city. Between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Ayanagar recorded the highest daytime rainfall in the city at 16 mm. During this same daytime period, Ridge logged 9.4 mm, Lodi Road registered 6.5 mm, and both Safdarjung and Palam measured 4.4 mm of rain each.

The IMD stated that light to very light rain is likely to occur at some places in Delhi over the next two days as weather activity continues.
