Delhi records warmest July night in five years as minimum temperature hits 31 degrees

Delhi recorded its warmest July night in five years on Sunday, July 19, 2026, with the minimum temperature reaching 31 degrees Celsius. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), weather stations across the city—including Safdarjung, Palam, Ayanagar, Lodhi Road, and the Ridge—recorded high temperatures and no rainfall during the day, leading to increased heat.
The minimum temperature of 31 degrees Celsius on Sunday was 3.8 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average. This marked the warmest July night in the national capital since July 1, 2021, when the city logged a minimum temperature of 31.7 degrees Celsius.
This was also the second time this month that the minimum temperature reached 31 degrees Celsius, following a similar reading on Friday, July 17, 2026.
At Safdarjung, Delhi's base station, the maximum temperature reached 38.3 degrees Celsius, which is 3.1 notches above the seasonal average.
Temperature readings varied across other local stations. Lodhi Road recorded a maximum temperature of 36.7 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 30 degrees Celsius. In Ayanagar, the maximum was 37.2 degrees Celsius and the minimum was 29.4 degrees Celsius.
Palam recorded a maximum temperature of 37.6 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 29 degrees Celsius. The Ridge weather station registered a maximum of 36.6 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 27.6 degrees Celsius.
No rainfall was recorded at any of the five observatories between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Relative humidity levels fluctuated throughout the day, starting at 68 percent at 8:30 a.m. and dropping to 50 percent by 5:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, Delhi's air quality was recorded in the "moderate" category at 4 p.m. on Sunday, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 169.
Relief may be on the way, as the IMD has predicted a generally cloudy sky with moderate rain for Monday, July 20, 2026. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to settle around 36 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.
