Delhi Records 27 Percent Excess Monsoon Rain Following Heavy August Showers

Delhi recorded surplus rainfall for the first time this monsoon season, accumulating 393.4mm of rain between June 1 and August 9. Driven by intense showers across five consecutive days at the beginning of August, the city received 27% excess rainfall compared to its normal benchmark of 309.5mm, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data.

Central Delhi recorded the highest precipitation among the capital's districts at 528.6mm, which was 39% above its normal average of 381.2mm for the period. West Delhi followed with 434.3mm against a normal level of 342.7mm, reflecting a 27% excess. South-East Delhi and East Delhi also registered excess rainfall of 26% and 23%, respectively.

Five districts—South Delhi, South-West Delhi, New Delhi, North-East Delhi, and North-West Delhi—were categorized in the normal rainfall range. Among them, New Delhi witnessed the lowest surplus at 7%. Data for North Delhi was unavailable.

The capital was initially in the deficit-rainfall zone during June following the arrival of the monsoon before transitioning to normal levels in July. The intense rain activity in early August, where the month's entire rainfall accumulated in just 10 days, pushed the city's overall totals into surplus territory and left zero districts in the deficit range.
