Delhi PWD to rebuild Dera Mandi Road drainage to ease Delhi-Gurgaon commute

The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) has decided to repair and redevelop the drainage line on the waterlogging-prone Dera Mandi Road in Chhatarpur, South West Delhi, to resolve long-term flooding and ensure hassle-free movement for commuters travelling between Delhi and Gurgaon. PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh announced the initiative on Friday after conducting an inspection of the critical road stretch.

The Dera Mandi Road serves as a key transit route connecting South West Delhi’s Chhatarpur area, known for its upscale farmhouses, with Gurgaon. However, the stretch has been heavily impacted by severe waterlogging during rain spells.

Following complaints about heavy rainwater accumulation, Minister Singh, along with Delhi government officials, inspected the condition of the road, drainage network, and sewer system on Friday. Singh noted that Mandi Gaon and Dera Gaon lie directly along the Delhi-Haryana border, where natural drainage channels have disappeared over the years due to extensive concrete construction, rapid urbanisation, and population growth. This has led to severe accumulation of rainwater and sewage on the road.

To provide a permanent solution, the PWD will construct a new precast Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) drain. The new drain will run from Dera Mandi Road to Dera Bhati Road, connecting to Bandh Road. From there, stormwater will be pumped into the SSN Marg drain within Delhi.

As the affected stretch falls under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the Delhi government is coordinating with multiple agencies. Officials also held a meeting with their counterparts in Haryana to redevelop the portion of the drainage stretch located in the neighbouring state to ensure comprehensive relief.

For immediate relief, the department has deployed Power Take-Off (PTO) pumps to continuously drain out accumulated water. Minister Singh has directed officials to prepare the project proposal on priority so that construction can begin at the earliest.

Additionally, officials noted that the PWD plans to construct a flyover and undertake an integrated corridor redevelopment at SSN Marg to further improve connectivity between Delhi and Gurgaon.
