Delhi Police Target Online Posts Against PM Modi Linked to Jantar Mantar Protest

The Delhi Police has asked social media platforms to remove objectionable videos, posts, and AI-generated deepfake content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, allegedly shared during the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) 36-day protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

A senior police officer confirmed that the exercise to remove objectionable online content is currently ongoing. Multiple posts uploaded across various social media platforms have already been taken down following police intervention.

In addition, formal notices have been issued to three social media platforms directing them to remove content containing offensive remarks and objectionable language against the Prime Minister. The Delhi Police’s social media monitoring team is identifying such content across platforms on a continuous basis.

Once the monitoring team detects objectionable material, notices are sent to the concerned social media platforms requesting appropriate action, including post removal. This monitoring exercise remains ongoing as part of the police's broader efforts to track and act against such online material.

Police officers have also identified around 450 social media accounts that allegedly shared deepfake and AI-generated content linked to the protest. The police have recommended that these accounts be blocked through their respective social media platforms.

The action follows the calling off of the CJP's 36-day protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, after the government accepted the party's demands, which included the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The protest had previously witnessed violence on July 20, when clashes broke out between Delhi Police personnel and students during a Sansad Chalo March towards Parliament, leaving several individuals injured on both sides. Although Delhi Police initially registered 15 FIRs in connection with the violence, they subsequently decided to withdraw them. Investigators are continuing to probe whether a wider conspiracy was hatched during the protest march.
