Delhi Police issue 1,000 speeding fines on Delhi-Dehradun e-way
The Delhi Traffic Police has issued more than 1,000 online fines for speed limit violations within two days following the integration of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway with its e-challan system. The system integration was completed on Monday, triggering an immediate surge in automated e-challans issued to speeding vehicles.
Six ANPR cameras installed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at two locations on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway fall under the territorial jurisdiction of the Delhi Traffic Police. Violations captured by these high-speed cameras are automatically transmitted to the Delhi Traffic Police enforcement centre, where immediate action and fine generation can be initiated.
Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Manish Agarwal stated that the initiative is an important step towards strengthening surveillance and enforcement on high-speed road corridors. He noted that adherence to prescribed speed limits and traffic regulations is essential for preventing road crashes and ensuring the safety of all commuters on the expressway.
Agarwal added that traffic authorities are also in the process of further strengthening the enforcement mechanism to identify and prosecute vehicles that are restricted from plying on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway corridor. The technology-driven system allows officers to monitor traffic and enforce prescribed speed limits across high-speed stretches continuously.
Commenting on the broader expansion of technology-enabled enforcement, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vijayanta Arya Goyal highlighted that the traffic police’s e-challan system has already been integrated with ANPR cameras installed on the Delhi stretch of the Dwarka Expressway.
Goyal stated that the department is actively working to integrate more ANPR cameras and intelligent traffic management systems installed on major highways and expressways with its enforcement system. The primary goal of these measures is to increase surveillance, improve compliance with traffic rules, and reduce road crashes and fatalities.
Traffic officials noted that the integrated ANPR camera system will provide additional operational benefits beyond speeding enforcement. The technology will also assist law enforcement agencies in tracking stolen vehicles, as well as identifying vehicles involved in road crashes and other criminal offences.
