Delhi Police Direct Civic Agencies to Repair Dwarka Link Road and Key Summit Routes
The Delhi Traffic Police have directed civic agencies to address road defects, non-functional streetlights, and overgrown trees along key routes across Dwarka, Lutyens' Delhi, and South Delhi ahead of the upcoming BRICS Summit. The instructions were issued following a comprehensive road survey conducted across corridors designated for the transit of international delegates attending the event scheduled for September 12 and 13.
A senior traffic police officer said that two formal letters were dispatched to civic authorities, one late last week and a follow-up earlier this week, identifying infrastructure issues that require immediate intervention. According to police, senior government officials alongside senior Delhi Traffic Police officers are scheduled to conduct a joint on-site inspection of the designated summit routes on Saturday.
The survey report flagged specific problems along arterial stretches connecting southwest Delhi and the airport. On the Dwarka Link Road, authorities noted that roadside trees require pruning to ensure clear visibility and smooth passage. Additionally, potholes were detected on the North Axis Road near Indira Gandhi International Airport terminals 1 and 2, while non-functional streetlights were recorded near the traffic signal close to the National Security Guard hub.
Inspectors also documented deficiencies across central and southern parts of the capital. Zebra crossings require repainting on Tees January Marg, Subramaniam Bharti Marg, and Rajesh Pilot Marg, while streetlights along Subramaniam Bharti Marg and Panchsheel Marg were found in need of repair. Potholes were highlighted near Dhaula Kuan, and roadside maintenance work was requested along Bhikaji Cama Place on the Ring Road. Police also flagged dark spots along the Ring Road near RK Puram, asking agencies to install functional lighting.
Responding to the findings, an official from the New Delhi Municipal Council said the civic body is undertaking necessary maintenance of roads and footpaths. The agency had previously divided 41 major roads into 14 zones, each supervised by an official to coordinate horticulture and infrastructure improvements. The Public Works Department and Delhi International Airport Limited did not respond to requests for comment.
The 18th BRICS Summit, taking place at Bharat Mandapam, will convene representatives and leaders from approximately 30 member and partner nations. The central and Delhi governments have ordered the closure of government offices, autonomous bodies, and public sector undertakings next Friday, with widespread traffic restrictions and diversions planned across central, south, and southwest Delhi.
