Delhi Police Deny Permission for September 5 CJP Protest March at India Gate
Delhi Police will not allow a protest march planned by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on September 5 from India Gate to the Delhi Police headquarters on Jai Singh Road in the New Delhi district, a senior officer said on Wednesday. The denial comes ahead of the two-day BRICS leaders' summit scheduled for September 12-13.
Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) is currently in force across the New Delhi district. The order prohibits processions, demonstrations, protests, and the assembly of five or more persons, except at designated protest sites such as Jantar Mantar. Police noted that India Gate is not a designated protest site.
A senior officer stated that the police had not received a formal request from the outfit, but added that even if an application is submitted, a protest march cannot be permitted in New Delhi due to security issues. The police are likely to ask organisers to seek permission for a venue outside the New Delhi district, depending on the expected turnout and scale of mobilisation.
The CJP announced the peaceful march on August 24, alleging that the Centre failed to honour assurances that led the group to end its 36-day agitation at Jantar Mantar on July 25. Families of NEET aspirants who died by suicide, alleged victims of police brutality, students, and youth organisations from across the country are expected to join the proposed three-kilometre march.
The All India Students' Association (AISA) has supported the march, seeking the withdrawal of FIRs against student protesters and an inquiry into allegations of pellet and bullet firing during previous demonstrations. AISA president Neha Bora said the issues that triggered the youth mobilisation remain unresolved, with cases still pending against students despite prior government commitments.
Security has been heightened across the district in preparation for the BRICS summit, which several foreign dignitaries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, are scheduled to attend. Delhi Police's Special Branch and the New Delhi district unit are monitoring potential mobilization, inter-state movement, social media activity, and the agenda of the planned march while managing route security and traffic arrangements.
