Delhi Police Arrest Woman for Plotting Rs 50 Lakh Extortion From Laxmi Nagar Husband

The Delhi Police Special Cell has arrested a woman and her accomplice for allegedly plotting to extort Rs 50 lakh from her businessman husband in Laxmi Nagar, East Delhi, with the help of a US-based gangster linked to the Jitender Gogi gang. The arrests, announced on Monday, exposed a domestic conspiracy behind threatening calls that the victim began receiving on June 14.

The arrested woman was identified as Sapna Jain, who had been married to the victim since 2007. Her alleged accomplice, 29-year-old Rajat, a resident of Sonipat in Haryana and a friend of Sapna's elder sister, was also arrested in connection with the case.

According to the police, the businessman, who runs a wholesale business in Laxmi Nagar, received threatening calls and messages from an international number starting on June 14. The caller claimed to be a member of the Gogi gang and demanded Rs 50 lakh, threatening to kill the businessman and his family if the money was not paid. To make the threats more convincing, the extortionists sent photographs and precise locations of the victim’s home and business.

An FIR was registered at the Laxmi Nagar police station on June 18, and the investigation was subsequently transferred to the New Delhi Range of the Special Cell.

A police team led by Inspectors Sanjay Kumar Gupta and Pankaj Chauhan, under the supervision of ACP Vivek Tyagi, used technical surveillance and human intelligence to trace the operation to Rajat, who was arrested on June 25.

Upon analyzing Rajat's mobile phone, the police discovered chats showing coordination between him, a US-based extortionist, Sapna, and her sister. Police said Rajat was in contact with Gogi gang members, including jailed gangster Rohit Moi, and had been introduced to Karmveer Pehalwan alias Meeta, a US-based associate suspected of facilitating the extortion calls.

The investigation revealed that long-standing family disputes had strained the marriage between Sapna and her husband. Police claimed Sapna believed her mother-in-law always sided with her husband during arguments.

According to the police, Sapna enlisted Rajat to extort the money, with plans to later eliminate her mother-in-law and physically assault her husband. She allegedly provided Rajat with details of her husband's daily movements to aid the conspiracy. Mobile phones containing chats detailing the conspiracy were recovered by the police.
