Delhi Police Arrest Proclaimed Offender in 2022 Madangir Murder Case

The Delhi Police Crime Branch has arrested Sumit Gupta, an associate of the Nasir-Shahrukh gang and a proclaimed offender wanted in connection with a 2022 gang rivalry murder case, officials said. Gupta was apprehended from a hotel in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, where he had been staying under a false identity.

Gupta was previously booked at the Ambedkar Nagar police station under sections relating to murder, attempted murder, and the Arms Act. The charges stem from a violent clash between rival gangs in the Madangir area on the night of May 27, 2022.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Chandra Kumar Singh, gunfire broke out during the confrontation, leaving two men injured. The victims, identified as 29-year-old Rohit and 28-year-old Gulshan, sustained gunshot wounds. Rohit later succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Gupta was originally arrested in connection with the fatal shooting but was granted interim bail in 2024. Following the conclusion of his interim bail period, he allegedly failed to surrender and went into hiding, evading law enforcement authorities.

Following his disappearance, a Saket court declared Gupta a proclaimed offender on May 26 last year. Investigators tracking his movements eventually traced him to Ahmedabad, leading to his capture by the Crime Branch team.

Following his apprehension in Ahmedabad, Gupta was brought back to the national capital, produced before a competent court, and remanded to judicial custody.
