Delhi Police Arrest Journalist for Circulating Fake AI Video of ACP Vivek Bhagat

Delhi Police Arrest Journalist for Circulating Fake AI Video of ACP Vivek Bhagat

The Delhi Police have arrested a 24-year-old independent journalist for allegedly creating and circulating a fabricated, AI-generated video that falsely portrayed Assistant Commissioner of Police Vivek Bhagat in an objectionable situation with a woman in New Delhi.

The video was circulated through the Instagram account @news_aaina0776 and presented as authentic CCTV footage. According to police, it showed an individual dressed in a police uniform engaging in sexually inappropriate conduct with a woman, while a photograph, name, and designation of ACP Bhagat were displayed alongside the footage to falsely suggest he was the person shown.

The Delhi Police social media monitoring unit detected the reel on October 4. An FIR was subsequently registered at the Cyber Police Station in New Delhi district under Sections 352, 353(1)(c), 336(3), 336(4), 340(2), and 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The incident followed an October 3 demonstration, after which 17 protesters, including a woman journalist who accused ACP Bhagat of sexually harassing and shoving her during the protest, were arrested by the Parliament Street police. Those protesters had been booked for staging a demonstration demanding the registration of an FIR against the ACP.

Investigators traced the Instagram account to Nadeem Ahmed Ameen, a resident of Palwal, Haryana, who ran an Instagram news handle called News Aina Today. Police apprehended Ameen from the Mewat region of Haryana on October 5 and recovered a mobile phone used to circulate the reel. The phone was logged into the account, and investigators found related photographs and content in its gallery establishing a digital trail.

Additional DCP, New Delhi, Manjeet stated that the accused used AI tools to create the video on October 3 before circulating it across social media platforms on October 4. During interrogation, Ameen told police that his intention was to defame the Delhi Police, provoke protesters, and trigger unrest. Police noted that Ameen, who had not cleared Class 10 and is the son of a retired government Urdu lecturer, launched the handle in April 2026, gathering around 24,000 subscribers, and began actively posting during a Cockroach Janta Party protest at Jantar Mantar in July.

Investigators are now examining Ameen's funding sources and associations to ascertain whether the video was part of a larger conspiracy to instigate anarchy during ongoing protests. Police are also identifying other social media handles involved in circulating false narratives against the force, and the accused is expected to be taken into police custody for further questioning.
