Delhi Opens Second Automated Vehicle Testing Centre at Tehkhand Depot

The Delhi government on Thursday inaugurated the capital's second Automated Testing Station at the Delhi Transport Corporation’s Tehkhand Depot in Tehkhand. The facility expands the city’s vehicle fitness-testing infrastructure and aims to reduce commercial vehicle owners' dependence on inspection centres located outside Delhi.

The newly established automated facility has four lanes and features an annual testing capacity of 72,000 vehicles. This includes provision for testing 52,000 heavy and light motor vehicles as well as 20,000 two-wheelers each year.

Under the layout of the Tehkhand station, two lanes have been specifically earmarked for heavy motor vehicles. The remaining two lanes are divided equally, with one lane dedicated to light motor vehicles and one designated for two-wheelers.

The automated centre will conduct multiple mandatory fitness checks without relying heavily on manual assessment. The equipment will evaluate braking efficiency, suspension performance, headlight alignment, side-slip, emission levels, and underbody condition to improve transparency and accuracy.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the capital previously lacked adequate testing facilities for its large commercial vehicle fleet. This shortage had routinely forced vehicle owners to travel to other parts of the National Capital Region to secure fitness certification.

The Tehkhand facility marks Delhi’s second Automated Testing Station, following the operational centre at Nand Nagri. The Delhi government noted that expanding the testing network is part of broader administrative efforts to enhance road safety and curb vehicular pollution across the city.
