Delhi-NCR Uber Driver Chameli Haldar Shares Struggles of Completing Over 6,000 Rides

A female Uber driver operating in the Delhi-NCR region has shared her experiences of navigating safety concerns, family doubts, and passenger behavior over her seven-year career. Chameli Haldar, who has completed over 6,000 rides on the platform, detailed her journey during a cab ride with content creator Mahek Dhameja, who recently documented their conversation in a video.
Haldar, who holds a 4.8 rating on Uber, spoke about the challenges of working in a male-dominated field. During the trip in Delhi, Dhameja asked Haldar about her daily struggles as a female driver and how her family reacted to her chosen profession. Haldar revealed that she has faced occasional derogatory remarks from passengers and strangers alike. Despite this, she stated that she does not care about such comments because she knows how to handle these situations.
Safety is a primary factor influencing Haldar's daily routine. Describing the Delhi-NCR region as unsafe for women, she explained that she manages security concerns by limiting her working hours, choosing to drive her cab only between 8:00 AM and 10:00 PM.
Haldar also opened up about the initial skepticism she faced at home. Her husband and family were initially opposed to her driving a cab to earn a living. However, they have since changed their minds and now praise her, particularly because she is the first person in her family to obtain a driver's license and learn how to drive a car. Toward the end of the video, Dhameja praised the driver, telling her, "Didi, aap inspiration ho" (Sister, you are an inspiration).
The interaction has drawn widespread attention on social media, where users praised Haldar's resilience. Commenters commended her for proving critics wrong and challenging outdated mindsets. Haldar, who also maintains her own Instagram account with nearly 5,200 followers and over 500 posts, shares her journey online under a bio that translates to, "To fulfill the dreams that could never be fulfilled anywhere."
