Delhi LG Sandhu Meets Connaught Place Traders Over Encroachments and Traffic
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu held a meeting with representatives from major market and traders’ associations on Saturday, gathering feedback on pressing civic challenges in commercial hubs, including Connaught Place. The discussion focused primarily on recurring issues such as unauthorised encroachments, severe traffic congestion, and inadequate parking arrangements.
During the session, Sandhu called for stronger coordination between local traders and civic agencies to resolve these long-standing operational problems. According to an official statement issued by the LG’s office, the interaction brought together representatives from several key commercial centers across the capital, including Connaught Place, Sarojini Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Mori Gate, and Chandni Chowk.
Representatives from the participating traders' associations highlighted major operational difficulties during the interaction. They pointed specifically to the growth of unauthorised encroachments on market spaces, frequent traffic snarls in surrounding lanes, and a persistent shortage of formal parking facilities, all of which hinder movement and accessibility in busy shopping districts.
In addition to commercial and traffic concerns, the Lieutenant Governor sought first-hand feedback regarding the effectiveness of the 'Jan Sunwai' initiative. The outreach effort is currently being conducted by the Delhi Police at police stations located across the city.
Sandhu emphasised that direct engagement with both market traders and local residents is critical for evaluating whether grievances concerning safety, traffic flow, illegal encroachments, and related community issues are being handled promptly and effectively by authorities.
Reaffirming the need for strict enforcement against all civic violations, Sandhu advocated for continuous improvements in urban planning and civic infrastructure. He underlined that maintaining smooth traffic movement, walkability, overall cleanliness, and disciplined parking is essential to preserve the appeal and accessibility of Delhi's primary market centers. Continuous dialogue between authorities and market bodies, he added, will remain necessary to secure practical solutions for both business owners and shoppers.
