Delhi LG directs DJB to repair pipeline and restore water supply to Sanjay Lake

On Thursday, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to expedite repairs on a damaged pipeline to restore the treated water supply to Sanjay Lake in New Delhi. The restoration of water flow from the Dallupura sewage treatment plant (STP) is considered critical for the survival of the lake, which has faced deteriorating conditions.

During a visit to the location, Sandhu reviewed the ongoing restoration and rejuvenation works being carried out by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). Officials briefed the Lieutenant Governor on the comprehensive plans to revive the 52-acre man-made lake and its adjoining 165-acre protected forest area.

Sandhu had previously expressed concern over the declining state of Sanjay Lake. The body of water has suffered from a reduced water supply, silt accumulation, and inflows of garbage and sewage. The Lieutenant Governor stressed that a regular supply of treated water must be restored at the earliest to maintain adequate water levels and ensure the lake remains a sustainable, year-round blue-green asset.

According to officials, several immediate remedial measures are already underway at the site. These active works include de-weeding, algae removal, strengthening the lake's embankments, and carrying out boundary repairs.

The broader rejuvenation project is structured to be completed in phases. Under the first phase, which is targeted for completion by August 2026, stagnant water will be channelled into the lake. This phase will also see the installation of bio-swales to improve groundwater recharge, the repair of pathways, and the removal of grass from the lake bed.

The second phase of the project is proposed to be completed by May 2027. This phase will include the expansion of water channelisation works, bio-remediation of the water body, and the installation of aerators and fountains to improve dissolved oxygen levels.

To further enhance the biodiversity of the surrounding area, the Lieutenant Governor directed officials to plant 5,000 native trees. Sandhu emphasized that restoring Sanjay Lake to its former glory was "non-negotiable."
