Delhi launches Solarize East campaign for rooftop solar in South-East Delhi
The Delhi government on Sunday launched the "Solarize East" campaign in South-East Delhi to assist residential consumers with installing rooftop solar panels, navigating financial subsidies, and completing the net-metering process. The initiative is being rolled out in partnership with BSES Yamuna Power Limited and the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC).
Under the scheme, residents can access central subsidies of up to Rs 78,000 through the national PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Specifically, the program offers a subsidy of Rs 30,000 for a 1-kW system, Rs 60,000 for a 2-kW system, and caps the financial support at Rs 78,000 for systems of 3 kW or more. Eligible households must apply through the national portal and select a registered vendor.
The launch follows new rules introduced by the DERC three days prior to simplify the rooftop solar installation process. The connection process has been reduced from three stages to a two-stage online system.
For rooftop systems of up to 10 kW, consumers are no longer required to undergo a technical-feasibility assessment, provided the solar system is installed on the same type of electricity supply. Additionally, these domestic consumers will not have to pay application or registration charges.
Once the solar panels are installed and documents are submitted, the power distribution company is required to inspect the system, verify documents, install the net meter, and provide connectivity within 10 days. Net metering allows residents to use solar-generated electricity and export surplus power back to the grid to adjust against their bills.
Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood stated that the campaign aims to bring together the government, residents' welfare associations, housing societies, and solar companies to deliver green power. While the campaign initially covers South-East Delhi, the government plans to expand it to other areas supplied by BSES Yamuna Power Limited based on public response.
