Delhi Launches 56 Women-Only E-Buses Connecting Connaught Place and Key Hubs

The Delhi government on Wednesday launched 56 dedicated women-only electric bus services connecting major hubs, including Connaught Place, to provide safer public transit for women and students across the capital.

Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off the ladies special services along with 200 new electric buses from the Delhi University Sports Complex. The launch also included a Delhi-Karnal interstate electric bus service and a public charging station at the Rajghat Depot-1.

Under the new setup, 30 ladies special trips will operate across 15 high-demand routes, while 26 University Ladies Special (U-Spl) trips will run on 13 routes. The services are scheduled during morning and evening peak hours, with morning departures between 7:52 am and 9:00 am and evening departures between 4:32 pm and 6:15 pm.

In addition to Connaught Place, the routes will connect major employment, educational, and institutional hubs such as Shivaji Stadium, Nehru Place, AIIMS, South Extension, R K Puram, ITO, Delhi Secretariat, Karol Bagh, and Kashmere Gate. The university routes will link colleges including Hindu College, Ramjas College, Daulat Ram College, Shri Ram College, Lady Shri Ram College, Gargi College, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, and Hansraj College.

To ensure passenger safety, women police personnel and home guards have been deployed on the ladies special buses alongside female staff. Panic buttons inside the vehicles have been integrated with the Delhi Police 112 PCR emergency response system to facilitate quick emergency intervention.

The 200 newly inducted electric buses include 88 12-metre buses and 112 nine-metre DEVI buses. With this addition, Delhi's electric bus fleet has crossed 5,000 vehicles, taking the city's total bus fleet to approximately 6,800. The government plans to expand the total fleet to around 14,000 by 2028-29.
