Delhi High Court Orders 24/7 Police Cover for Uttam Nagar Clash Accused's Family

Delhi High Court Orders 24/7 Police Cover for Uttam Nagar Clash Accused's Family

The Delhi High Court has ordered round-the-clock police deployment outside the residence of a woman in Uttam Nagar whose son is an accused in a fatal Holi clash, following allegations that her family was being repeatedly attacked by local residents and relatives of the deceased.

Justice Girish Kathpalia passed the order on September 30 while hearing a petition filed by the woman, Shahnaz, who sought immediate and adequate police protection for herself and her family. The court observed that while legal proceedings were under way against her son, the family could not be left vulnerable to mob violence.

The underlying case stems from a clash between two neighbouring families with a longstanding dispute during Holi celebrations, in which 26-year-old Tarun was killed. Police have apprehended several people in connection with the incident, including a minor.

Shahnaz's counsel informed the court that locals, including relatives of the deceased, had been attacking the residence over the preceding two days. The counsel placed CCTV footage before the bench showing stones and bricks being hurled at the house, which is situated in a narrow lane.

Taking note of the video evidence, Justice Kathpalia observed that the narrow lane location would make it easier for police personnel to secure the premises. Addressing the situation, the judge noted that whatever the legal proceedings against the petitioner's son, law would take its course, but the petitioner could not be left exposed to violence. A police officer present at the hearing assured the bench that adequate personnel would be deployed immediately.

The High Court directed the local police of Uttam Nagar to ensure continuous round-the-clock deployment in the area, specifically in the lane where the house is located, at least until the situation returns to normal. The court also instructed police to submit a status report within a week, backed by documentary evidence of the deployment and preventive steps, and listed the matter for further hearing on October 16.
