Delhi High Court Issues Notice Over Disclosure of CJP Leader Saurav Das's Address
The Delhi High Court on Monday sought responses from political commentator Abhijit Iyer Mitra, social media platforms X and Google, and several media portals in response to a petition filed by Cockroach Janta Party spokesperson Saurav Das over the alleged unauthorised disclosure of his residential address and personal details.
Justice Sachin Datta issued summons and notices to Mr. Mitra, X, Google, and multiple media platforms. The court has scheduled the next hearing in the matter for September 14.
In his petition, Mr. Das approached the High Court seeking the protection of his privacy, dignity, and personal security, alongside damages for the alleged violation of his privacy rights. He requested a permanent and mandatory restraining order to stop the defendants from publishing, circulating, or otherwise disclosing his residential address.
The plea also sought directions compelling the defendants, including digital platforms X and Google, to take down content, videos, and posts revealing his personal details and to disable public access to them. During Monday's hearing, the court was informed that platform X had already removed posts that disclosed Mr. Das's address.
Mr. Das alleged that the defendants unlawfully obtained, recorded, and repeatedly disseminated his residential address along with other personal information, such as details regarding his background, parents, and sexuality. He further claimed that some defendants entered the shared residential premises where he lives, recorded footage of the interiors, and subsequently published the material on X.
Highlighting safety risks, Mr. Das submitted that his journalistic work, public-interest disclosures, and political engagement had previously exposed him to threats of violence and targeted hostility. He argued that the repeated publication and online amplification of his exact home address created a genuine and foreseeable safety risk, potentially exposing him to violence in and around his residence.
