Delhi GST Department Seizes 4.2 Lakh Imported Cigarettes Worth Rs 65 Lakh
NEW DELHI — In a major enforcement drive targeting tax evasion and the illegal trade of tobacco products, the Delhi government's Goods and Services Tax department has seized 4.2 lakh sticks of imported cigarettes valued at approximately Rs 65 lakh, according to an official statement issued on Wednesday.
The seizure was carried out by an enforcement team from the anti-evasion branch of the GST department during a routine inspection across the national capital. Officers intercepted a commercial vehicle transporting a large consignment of imported super-slim, premium filter cigarettes.
Upon stopping and examining the vehicle, officials discovered that the consignment was being moved in direct contravention of statutory mandates and regulations governing the sale and distribution of tobacco products within India.
A thorough inspection of the confiscated stock revealed that the front of the cigarette packets failed to display the mandatory pictorial health warning. This failure constitutes a direct violation of Section 7 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003.
Under the provisions of Section 7 of the 2003 legislation, no person is permitted to produce, supply, sell, or distribute any cigarette or tobacco product packages unless they carry the specified health warnings prominently on the packaging. Authorities noted that these legal safeguards and statutory packaging mandates apply equally to all tobacco products imported from foreign jurisdictions for commercial sale or distribution inside the country.
Department officials confirmed that following the detection of the non-compliant consignment, enforcement proceedings were formally initiated under the statutory provisions of the Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017.
The operation forms part of the administration's broader ongoing monitoring efforts to crack down on untaxed commercial goods and unmonitored consignments being moved across Delhi in bypass of statutory tax regulations and public health compliance frameworks.
