Delhi Govt to Launch 70 DTC Buses to Six Bihar Cities from Anand Vihar
The Delhi government is set to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Bihar government to launch a dedicated inter-state bus service connecting the national capital with six major cities in Bihar, operating primarily out of a new terminal at Anand Vihar in east Delhi. Transport minister Pankaj Kumar Singh stated on Saturday that the service is scheduled to become operational before Chhath Puja to cater to the sharp surge in passenger movement during the festive season.
The proposed bus service will connect Delhi directly to Darbhanga, Purnia, Muzaffarpur, Patna, Gaya, and Bhagalpur without requiring passengers to change buses along the route. In the initial phase, the Delhi Transport Corporation is expected to deploy 70 semi-sleeper deluxe buses, offered in both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned variants. This initial rollout is part of a broader proposal by the transport department to add 149 buses for inter-state operations.
To handle the increased bus traffic and facilitate operations, a new bus terminal spread across a width of 13.5 metres is being constructed at Anand Vihar. The site serves as a key transport interchange, linking inter-state bus operations with the Delhi Metro and rail network.
Singh noted that Delhi has a large population with links to Bihar, leading to significant passenger traffic between the two states. He explained that infrastructure for inter-state transit is being strengthened alongside the planned bus expansion, with Anand Vihar playing a central role as the primary operational hub. The services are targeted at migrant workers, students, and families traveling between Delhi and urban centers in Bihar.
Bihar will become the third state to receive dedicated DTC inter-state bus services, joining existing routes operated to Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Official route-wise deployment, service frequency, timings, and operational permits will be finalized in coordination with the Bihar government once the MoU is formally executed.
