Delhi Govt Revises Secretariat Plan, Single Tower to Come Up at ITO Site

Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh on Thursday announced that the Delhi government has revised its plan for the new Delhi Secretariat, which will now be built as a single tower on a 10-acre plot at ITO following the demolition of the existing Income Tax office.

Under the updated proposal, the Income Tax office and other government offices operating at the location will be relocated to a new multi-storey building on an eight-acre plot situated on the opposite side of the road.

The Delhi government had initially planned to construct a twin-tower complex for the new secretariat. However, that design has now been altered to a single-tower facility across the 10-acre area.

Mr. Singh stated that the Delhi government held discussions with the Income Tax Department regarding the land and relocation arrangements before advancing the plan. The proposal has been submitted to the Central government for review. Once the final approvals are secured, the Delhi government will float a tender to initiate the construction process.

According to the minister, the broader project involves redeveloping a total of 18 acres of land around the ITO area. Out of this total parcel, five acres currently belong to the Income Tax office. Following the completion of the redevelopment, the Income Tax office will be allocated space proportional to its original landholding.

The project aims to address long-standing logistical and administrative difficulties in the capital. At present, numerous Delhi government offices remain scattered across different parts of the city. Additionally, the existing Delhi Secretariat, located at the Players Building near the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, is facing an acute shortage of working space.
