Delhi Government Searches for Aircraft and Pilots for Upcoming Cloud-Seeding Drill

The Delhi government has started the process of securing aircraft, hiring pilots, and obtaining flight permissions in New Delhi for an upcoming cloud-seeding drill. This operational push is designed to establish the necessary groundwork and secure essential aviation resources ahead of the next weather-modification exercise in the capital.

Cloud seeding is a weather-modification technique that is aimed at enhancing a cloud's natural ability to produce rain. The physical process of cloud seeding involves dispersing specific substances, such as silver iodide and other chemical compounds, directly into suitable cloud formations to encourage the development of raindrops or ice crystals.

According to sources, a major part of the ongoing work by the Delhi government is focused specifically on operational preparations. In previous attempts to conduct cloud seeding in Delhi, operational logistics emerged as a primary challenge for the authorities, hindering the successful execution of the weather-modification drills.

In those earlier trials, the government faced significant hurdles in securing the required flight permissions from various regulatory bodies. Additionally, arranging the necessary aircraft and finding qualified pilots within the critical time limits proved to be extremely difficult for the organizers.

Another major obstacle identified in past attempts was the coordination of take-off schedules. Because cloud-seeding operations must take place within a very limited time window when meteorological conditions are optimal, any delay in coordinating take-offs among different agencies can cause the entire exercise to fail.

To prevent these issues from repeating, authorities are working to resolve these practical challenges well in advance. While the scientific and technical elements of the cloud-seeding project are currently being developed by experts at IIT-Kanpur, the government is focusing its efforts on the logistical side of the operation.

The upcoming drill requires multiple clearances and close coordination among several distinct agencies. By securing pilots, aircraft, and flight permissions early, the Delhi government hopes to ensure that there are no delays when suitable weather conditions finally arise for the exercise.
