Delhi Government Orders Action Against Fortis Shalimar Bagh After Stabbed Youth's Death
The Delhi government has announced it will initiate action against Fortis Hospital in Shalimar Bagh following a district administration inquiry that revealed critical lapses in patient care, including allegedly delaying emergency treatment for a stabbed youth by demanding payment beforehand. The delay in medical care allegedly led to the youth's death.
The inquiry was ordered by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta following a complaint received during a 'Jan Sunwai'. The complaint alleged that the hospital demanded payment before beginning treatment on the youth, who had suffered stab injuries, and that this delay resulted in his death.
On Thursday, June 25, 2026, an inspection team led by the Central District Magistrate, along with officials from the Health Department, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and the Delhi Fire Service, inspected the hospital facility in Shalimar Bagh.
During the inspection, the team examined CCTV footage and records maintained by the emergency department. The Delhi government statement noted that the footage showed the injured youth walking into the emergency department on his own, suggesting that timely treatment could have saved his life.
In addition to the lapses in patient care, the joint-department inspection revealed multiple other irregularities at the hospital. These included alleged violations of building by-laws, unauthorised construction, deficiencies in the fire safety system, misuse of the basement, and serious lapses in adherence to standard operating procedures governing medical protocols.
Following these findings, the Delhi government decided to initiate official action against the hospital and is currently preparing a detailed inquiry report.
In a statement, Fortis Hospital assured the authorities of its complete cooperation in the matter. The hospital stated that it remains committed to the highest standards of patient care, clinical excellence, and regulatory compliance. It added that it will review the details once they are formally shared and that patient safety and well-being remain its foremost priority.
