Delhi Congress Meets LG Saxena Over Youth Congress Arrests at Bharat Mandap
A delegation of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, led by its president Devender Yadav, met Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena in New Delhi to submit a memorandum regarding the arrest and prosecution of Indian Youth Congress workers and their president. The police action followed a demonstration staged during the AI Impact Summit at Bharat Mandap.
The visiting delegation urged the Lieutenant Governor to ensure restraint and proportionality in the enforcement of the law. In their representation, party leaders expressed serious concerns over the police measures, pointing out that no allegations of violence, damage to public property, or threats to public safety had been publicly attributed to the individuals taken into custody.
Addressing the matter, Devender Yadav stated that political parties possess a democratic right to hold peaceful demonstrations. He noted that the Youth Congress workers were merely exercising this right in a non-violent manner, yet the Delhi Police chose to invoke severe legal clauses against them.
All India Congress Committee treasurer and Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Ajay Maken also condemned the police intervention. Maken termed the arrests of the Youth Congress workers completely unconstitutional and described the action as the murder of democracy, maintaining that the opposition has every right to speak out against anti-national decisions.
