Delhi Capitals Batter Abhishek Porel Remanded to Police Custody in Rape Case
Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abhishek Porel was arrested late Monday night in Hooghly, West Bengal, and remanded to three days of police custody on Tuesday in connection with a rape case filed by a third-year medical student.
The 23-year-old cricketer was taken into custody by Mogra police after the Calcutta High Court directed law enforcement to arrest him and seize his electronic devices. Porel was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court in Chinsurah on Tuesday, where his bail application was rejected.
The legal proceedings follow a complaint filed at Mogra police station on June 23 by the complainant, a medical student hailing from Karnataka. According to her complaint, she first met Porel in January 2023 and maintained regular contact with him starting in April of that year. She alleged that the two had been in a relationship for approximately three-and-a-half years, and that Porel had promised to marry her, with both families engaging in discussions regarding the proposed marriage.
The woman alleged that she travelled to Delhi on April 2, 2026, to meet Porel and was subsequently sexually assaulted. In her statement to police, she alleged that she was subjected to torture, kept in isolation, and denied food, which ultimately led to her hospitalisation. She also alleged that Porel threatened her and warned that photographs of their intimate moments could be made public.
After alleging police inaction regarding her initial complaint at Mogra police station, the woman approached the Calcutta High Court. Following judicial intervention, police registered a case under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 69, which addresses sexual intercourse committed through deceitful means such as a false promise of marriage, along with relevant sections of the Information Technology Act.
The Calcutta High Court instructed police to secure Porel's electronic devices as part of the investigation. Court officials were informed that police had already seized a pen drive related to the case and sent it for forensic examination. Neither Porel nor his family members have publicly responded to the allegations.
