Class 12 Graduate Arrested for Running Illegal Abortion Clinic in Ghata
Police on Monday arrested a Class 12 graduate for allegedly posing as a doctor and running an illegal abortion clinic at Banjara Market in Ghata village, Gurugram. The accused, identified as Kamal Mahato, was detained on Sunday afternoon after falling for a decoy operation conducted by local health officials.
The case came to light after the office of the Gurgaon Civil Surgeon received a tip-off regarding illegal abortion procedures being conducted at 'M/s Kamal Clinic' in Ghata. In response, health officials constituted a verification team comprising Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr Devender Singh Solanki and MTP Nodal Officer Dr Harish Kumar.
To catch the operator, the Health department arranged a decoy patient who was approximately two months pregnant. She was provided with marked currency notes totaling Rs 1,200 and sent into the clinic. Mahato demanded the money, handed her an 'Unwanted-Kit' Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) medicine, and explained the procedure to administer the tablets to terminate the pregnancy.
Upon receiving a signal from the decoy patient, the health team entered the clinic and caught Mahato on the spot. Officials recovered the marked currency notes from his table drawer, along with an additional MTP kit.
A search of the premises uncovered a large stockpile of allopathic medicines, antibiotics, injections, cough syrups, intravenous fluids, and medical equipment including a blood pressure monitor, stethoscope, and glucometer. None of the items had sales, purchase, or distribution records. During questioning, Mahato disclosed that he had studied only up to Class 12 and held no medical degree or registration under the MTP Act.
Following an FIR lodged late Sunday evening, Mahato was formally arrested on Monday. He has been booked under the MTP Act, the National Medical Commission Act, the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 125 for endangering life or personal safety and 318(4) for cheating.
The operation is part of an ongoing drive against unauthorised medical practitioners in the district. Health officials reiterated that strict surveillance and surprise raids will continue across Gurugram.
