Carpenter Electrocuted Fixing Water Pump in South Delhi's Tigri

A 39-year-old carpenter died after being electrocuted while fixing the electrical wiring of a water pump near his residence in JJ Camp, Tigri area, South Delhi, on Saturday evening around 6:00 PM.

The victim was identified as Arman Khan. Relatives rushed him to Batra Hospital shortly after the incident, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Khan is survived by his wife and four children.

Tigri police station received a PCR call regarding the electrocution at around 6:00 PM. Officers have initiated inquest proceedings while an enquiry is underway. No First Information Report (FIR) has been registered so far, and Khan's body has been preserved in a mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Preliminary police investigation suggests the electrocution was caused by faulty wiring attached to the water pump rather than the tanker. Police stated they are ascertaining whether the water tanker belonged to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) or a private agency, though initial findings showed no defect in the vehicle.

A senior government official stated that no DJB involvement was found, explaining that the incident occurred while Khan was using a private pump to move water from a ground-level tank to a rooftop tank. Official statements added that a private tanker had arrived at the spot and loose wires fell on it, causing it to become charged.

The death triggered protests by local residents on Saturday night, who demanded piped water connections to avoid such hazards. Residents alleged that an ongoing water shortage forces people to rely on tankers and makeshift pump setups. Local resident Virendra Kumar said the water crisis had lasted for two months, criticising official explanations regarding pipeline damage from metro construction.
