Cab driver Basu Singh accused of raping and murdering child in Mehrauli

A commercial cab driver, Basu Singh, allegedly abducted, raped, and murdered a 10-year-old girl in the Mehrauli area of Delhi before driving to Gurgaon, where he washed his vehicle near his employer’s residential building to destroy forensic evidence. The Delhi Police have recovered key physical evidence and tracked the suspect's movements following the incident.
According to police sources, Singh operated with precision to cover his tracks after committing the crime. He allegedly changed his clothes on the roadside and later thoroughly scrubbed his car to remove any potential forensic evidence.
After cleaning the vehicle, Singh resumed his work as a commercial driver. He accepted the next ride that came his way and dropped off the passenger as if nothing had occurred.
The Delhi Police seized the pair of clothes that Singh was originally wearing during the crime. Investigators matched these clothes to the garments he was spotted wearing in CCTV footage.
The CCTV footage obtained by the police also captured Singh cleaning his vehicle. This clean-up took place near his employer’s residential building in Gurgaon a short while after the crime was committed.
An investigation into Singh's background revealed that he is a habitual offender with a criminal history dating back more than a decade. He faces at least five cases registered in his hometown in the Khagaria district of Bihar.
These prior cases, which were registered in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022, include charges of molestation, rioting, and attempted murder. Police sources also described him as a drug addict.
While the Delhi Police are still waiting to obtain a formal criminal dossier from the Bihar Police, Singh has claimed that these prior cases were filed during a family land dispute. One of his family members also stated that one of the cases was related to a protest held during a festival.
The incident has raised serious safety concerns regarding commercial cab drivers operating with unverified criminal backgrounds.
