BJP, Congress Seek Extension of Delhi Voter Roll Revision Deadline Past Sept 30
The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress on Monday sought an extension of the September 30 deadline for filing claims, objections, and Form 6 applications under the Special Intensive Revision of Delhi's electoral roll. The ongoing revision process directly impacts approximately 33.1 lakh electors who have been issued notices for either logical discrepancies or under the no-mapping category.
Under the existing schedule, claims and objections are set to be disposed of by October 29, with the publication of the final electoral roll scheduled for November 4. According to official data available on Monday, 92,284 Form 6 applications for voter inclusion and 1,484 objections seeking deletion of names have been submitted across the city since August 31.
BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor called for extending the registration deadline to October 15. Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra stated that party teams and booth-level agents have been instructed to assist residents who received notices and guide them in filling Form 6 applications. Malhotra said the primary focus was to ensure every citizen's name appears on the voter list in only one place in the country.
A Congress delegation also approached Delhi Chief Electoral Officer Ashok Kumar to formally request an extension until November 30. The delegation was led by Rajesh Garg, chairman of the party's Booth Management Committee, and Sunil Kumar, chairman of the Legal and Human Resources Department, who cited persistent administrative delays and crowding at election offices.
Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav said the Election Commission had not yet issued more than half of the required notices. He added that most booth-level officers are not clear about the precise procedure for accepting replies to the notices, leading to long queues.
Regarding the timeline, Chief Electoral Officer Ashok Kumar previously said on September 19 that election authorities would assess the ground situation and seek an extension from the Election Commission if it becomes necessary.
