Armed Gang Robs Rs 9 Lakh From Social Activist's House in New Usmanpur
An armed gang robbed cash and jewellery worth approximately Rs 9 lakh from the residence of a social activist in northeast Delhi's New Usmanpur on Sunday afternoon after gaining entry by falsely claiming they were invited inside for tea. The robbers held the activist's wife and three children hostage at gunpoint for about an hour before fleeing the scene.
The incident occurred at around 1:30 PM on Sunday when the homeowner, identified as Harishchandra, was away. According to the Delhi police, the gang members initially contacted Harishchandra by phone, claiming they had arrived at his residence for a meeting.
Harishchandra informed the callers that he was not at home and advised them that they should have called him before arriving. Shortly after the conversation, his mobile phone switched off due to a low battery.
Taking advantage of the disconnected call, the thieves approached Harishchandra's family. They told his wife and three children that Harishchandra had spoken to them and requested that they be invited inside the house to have tea while waiting for his return.
Once inside the house, the suspects brandished firearms and held the family hostage. They tied the hands of the mother and her three children with ropes and stuffed bandages into their mouths to prevent them from raising an alarm. The victims reported that the armed men repeatedly pointed guns at their heads during the ordeal.
The gang spent approximately one hour searching the property, scanning every corner of the house. They looted Rs 9 lakh in cash along with jewellery. Before escaping through the back gate of the house, the robbers also removed and took away the digital video recorder of the CCTV cameras installed at the residence.
After the suspects fled, the family members managed to contact the Delhi police. Police teams rushed to the spot to initiate an investigation.
The police stated that they are currently scanning CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify the suspects. Efforts are underway to trace their escape route and determine if the gang has been involved in similar offences across the city.
