AR Rahman Wanted Ranbir Kapoor to Sing All Rockstar Songs, Imtiaz Ali Reveals

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has revealed that music composer A. R. Rahman originally wanted actor Ranbir Kapoor to sing all the songs for the 2011 film Rockstar. Ali shared this behind-the-scenes trivia through an audio note posted on Instagram, giving fans a peek into a fun conversation he once had with the composer during the movie's production.
According to Ali, Rahman had asked him if Kapoor had singing abilities. The composer expressed that he was ready to let the lead actor record the entire musical album for the film. Ali then approached Kapoor with the proposal.
Upon hearing the suggestion, Kapoor "freaked out" because he did not know how to sing. As a result, the plan was shelved, and Kapoor did not perform the vocals for the movie.
Despite Kapoor's reluctance, Ali shared that the discussion ultimately left a lasting impact on his filmmaking. The idea of having actors sing their own songs later inspired other performers in Ali's movies.
Ali noted that actors Alia Bhatt, Diljit Dosanjh, and Vedang Raina were subsequently inspired to sing in his movies. He added that Raina recently impressed Rahman himself with his performance of the song "Maskara".
This behind-the-scenes interaction reveals a lesser-known aspect of the musical development and planning behind the highly acclaimed Rockstar soundtrack, which was released in 2011.
