AIIMS Delhi Performs Dual Kidney Transplant Using 70-Year-Old Donor Organs

Doctors at AIIMS Delhi successfully performed a dual kidney transplant on a 56-year-old woman on July 28, using organs donated by a 70-year-old deceased woman. The kidneys were transported to the capital on an Army helicopter from the Command Hospital in Chandimandir, Chandigarh.

Because of the donor's advanced age, surgeons transplanted both kidneys into the single recipient. Medical experts explained that this dual transplantation strategy helps provide adequate kidney function for the patient while maximizing the use of donor organs that might otherwise be declined due to age.

The operation represents the hospital's second successful dual kidney transplant utilizing organs from an elderly "marginal donor." AIIMS doctors noted that the procedure highlights the potential of using carefully selected older donor organs to help address India's ongoing shortage of kidneys for transplantation.
