70-Year-Old Woman Killed as Speeding Mercedes Triggers Multi-Vehicle Crash in Narela

A 70-year-old woman was killed on Saturday morning in Mamurpur, Narela, after a head-on collision between a Mercedes-Benz and a WagonR triggered a multi-vehicle crash that crushed her on the roadside. The deceased, identified as Urmila Bhardwaj, a resident of Mamurpur village, was feeding birds and insects on the road near Gate No. 1 of Himalaya Apartment around 8 a.m. when the smash-up occurred.

According to police, the speeding Mercedes-Benz struck an oncoming WagonR head-on along the narrow stretch of road. The impact forced the smaller vehicle backward into a parked three-wheeler goods carrier stationed near a wall. Bhardwaj, who was standing near the three-wheeler, was caught and crushed between the vehicles. Members of the public transported her to a hospital, where she was declared dead upon arrival.

The case was registered following a complaint by Geeta Verma, who was inside the WagonR alongside her husband, driver Narendra Kumar, and their three-year-old child. Both Verma and Kumar sustained minor injuries during the crash. Local residents who witnessed the incident caught the Mercedes driver at the scene and handed him over to responding police officers.

Police arrested the driver, 27-year-old Subham Sharma, who is the son of a Haryana Police sub-inspector. Investigators seized an empty liquor bottle and a beer bottle from inside his vehicle, with the beer bottle visible in video footage recorded by local residents after the crash. A senior police officer noted that Sharma was returning home from a party with friends at the time of the incident.

Officers stated that Sharma has completed an MA degree and is currently unemployed. The Mercedes belonged to him after being purchased from a friend, though ownership had not yet been officially transferred to his name. Police have sent his blood samples for laboratory examination to confirm whether he was intoxicated.
