27-Year-Old Noida Employee Held for Stalking Woman via Fake Instagram Accounts
A 27-year-old man who works at a private firm in Noida was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly stalking a woman since 2022 and repeatedly creating fake Instagram accounts in her name to harass her and her family members.
The accused, identified as Kumar, resides in New Ashok Nagar. Police said he allegedly used multiple fake social media profiles featuring the victim’s name and photographs to transmit obscene images and videos directly to her husband, in-laws, and other relatives.
The case was registered under Section 67A of the Information Technology Act following a formal complaint filed by the victim in July. In her complaint, the woman told officers that an unidentified person had been subjecting her to relentless harassment across social media platforms. Although the woman repeatedly flagged the malicious accounts to Meta, which resulted in their suspension, the accused continued to create fresh accounts to resume the harassment.
Investigators subsequently launched a technical probe to unmask the operator of the accounts. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Rahul Alwal said that technical investigation helped the police trace the person behind these accounts.
According to police officials, the accused had been stalking the woman since 2022. Following her marriage, he shifted to harassing her and her new family on social media. The woman initially refrained from filing a police complaint against him at the time.
During interrogation, the accused told police that he knew the victim and had been following her since 2022. He admitted to creating the fake social media profiles with the deliberate intention of defaming and harassing her.
Police recovered the mobile phone allegedly used to carry out the online harassment from his possession. Investigators are currently examining the seized phone along with other digital evidence as part of the ongoing probe. Police noted that the accused has no prior involvement in any criminal cases.
