21-Year-Old Brain-Dead Woman Saves Multiple Lives Through Organ Donation

A 21-year-old woman declared brain dead following a road accident has saved multiple lives after her family consented to multi-organ donation. The retrieved organs—including her liver, two kidneys, and corneas—were allocated to patients across different hospitals in Delhi and Faridabad through the government-regulated organ allocation system.

The woman was brought to Amrita Hospital in Faridabad late on August 20 with severe head injuries sustained in a road crash. She was immediately admitted to the hospital's Neuro Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where medical teams administered intensive treatment. Despite extensive clinical efforts, the severity of the trauma proved unsurvivable, and doctors subsequently declared her brain dead.

Following the declaration, hospital staff counselled the grieving family regarding deceased organ donation. In the midst of their loss, the family agreed to donate her viable organs to help patients on waiting lists.

Her liver, both kidneys, and corneas were retrieved in accordance with statutory protocols. One of the kidneys was transplanted into a patient at Amrita Hospital itself, while the remaining retrieved organs were distributed to designated transplant centres across the region based on approved waiting lists.

Because the fatal accident involved a medico-legal case, the organ donation procedure required coordination alongside mandatory statutory clearances and post-mortem formalities. To prevent deterioration of the retrieved organs and ensure swift delivery within the strict clinical time window, Haryana Police and Delhi Police collaborated to establish an interstate green corridor.

Traffic management teams from both states actively coordinated across borders to facilitate uninterrupted transport, eliminating transit delays and ensuring the organs reached the recipient hospitals safely.
